We are getting swamped with calls for help with pet accidents!  Every year this happens when the hotter temps kick in.  Folks don't like to be outside as long when walking the pets, likewise many pets just do not like the heat.  Shorter walks mean more pet accidents indoors.  The heat can also cause dehydration, also a big cause of increased pet accidents.  Make sure your pets are getting plenty of fresh water.  Be prepared for pet accident emergencies.  You need Shout laundry pretreater, white vinegar, and terry cloth towels from the ragbag.  First blot/remove the pet accident as much as possible with paper towels.  Then rinse the area with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and cold water.  Note that vinegar is 5% citiric acid, so it makes a very efficient sanitizer.  Blot with the terry cloth.  Now thoroughly treat the area with Shout.  Let sit for a few minutes, then blot with the terry cloth.  Repeat as needed, or as stain transfer continues.  Rinse and blot a final time with the vinegar solution.  Hopefully this will save you a service call for a pet accident or two this Summer.  We are always happy to coach our customers in Golden, Arvada, Lakewood as needed.  If you feel like you are outmatched, or if you are ready for regular carpet cleaning, just give us a call/text!

Last month several of our carpet cleaning customers in Arvada, Golden, Lakewood  had small floods from frozen pipes.  Recently we have had 2 small floods from kitchen appliances.  Most folks want to handle smaller floods without an insurance claim.  In the past carpet padding was immediately pulled out and replaced.  These days carpet padding is expensive.  The better padding with a moisture barrier is really expensive.  If your flood was from clean water, consider drying and reusing the padding.  Call us if you need help with the restoration from your small flood, or even if you just need some coaching while you are taking care of it yourself.

Winter weather, freezing temperatures. The dogs have their sweaters on, and we have rescheduled all routes for Monday/Tuesday. We are back in the shop on Wednesday. Text or call and ask about our New Year coupon to save on your carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, area rug cleaning. Stay safe and warm!

Why not start the New Year with better air quality inside your home!  You'll need a step ladder and a shop vac.  If your house doesn't have a shop vac, we encourage you to take a trip to Lowes
https://www.lowes.com
  or Home Depot.  Rigid
https://www.rigid.com
 and Shop Vac
https://shopvac.com
both make several affordable models with many helpful uses around the house.  They are great to have on hand for water emergencies.  Use your shop vac to get the biggest part of the dust on the fan, then use a wet cloth or paper towel to wipe the blades.  Next is the A/C filters.  You already have the ladder and vac set up, so now is the time!  Shop vac around vent covers, cold air returns as you change out the filters.  Next project, clean up your vacuum cleaner.  Use your shop vac to clean out the vacuum chamber/housing.   Change the belt, change/empty  the bag.  Check your cord for tears or fraying.  Usually these can be patched with electrical tape to extend the life of the cord.   One other idea?  Roll your area rugs back to inspect the pads.  They act like huge filters gathering all kinds of dust and particulate.  Jump on Amazon
https://amazon.com
to order new pads as needed.  Want to freshen up your area rugs while you are changing the pads?  Give Parker Family Carpet Cleaning a text/call and ask about our New Year coupon!

Brad's cactuses are loving the heat.  Most of our customers and their pets are not.  When it gets this hot, folks tend to go on shorter walks.  Dogs have their routine disrupted.  Likewise dogs are at greater risk of dehydration with these temperatures.   Here at Parker Brothers Carpet Cleaning we have had a high number of emergency calls for pet accidents. Pets get dehydrated just as we do. Double check your pet's water dish in hot weather. Likewise make sure pets are not getting overheated. Avoid unnecessary health problems for your pets and unnecessary charges from your carpet cleaners. Enjoy the rest of the summer!

We had a huge turnout for Brad's big day.  Thank you for all the birthday greetings from our family, friends, customers.  Happy Birthday Brad!

Don't get buffaloed by your carpet cleaning service in Golden, Arvada, Lakewood! Ask questions ahead of time so you know right where you stand with your carpet cleaner. A few simple questions before your job can help make sure there are no unpleasant surprises. Find out about things like dry time and furniture moving. Are their products kid and pet safe? Do they vacuum before they begin or do you have to do it? Will there be additional charges, and if so, how much? Are you able to review their liability insurance on-line? How long have they been in business? Are they established in your neighborhood, with local referrals/reviews? Who are they sending to your house and how much experience does he/she have? Just a bit of research can really hedge your bet when it comes to your carpet cleaning/ upholstery cleaning/area rug cleaning ending up being a good value!

It's Daylight Saving Time this weekend. Remember to set your clocks forward on Saturday night. Don't be late for chucrch on Sunday!

Think ahead to schedule savings into your Spring carpet cleaning in Arvada, Golden, Lakewood. Don’t wait until the last minute to call your carpet cleaners. Giving your carpet cleaning company lead time allows them to build a route in your area, rather than scheduling drive time for just one job. This allows them to quote a better price. Likewise take a few minutes to prep for your cleaning. A carpet cleaning quote reflects both labor time and difficulty. If your job is free of clutter( like toys, plants, magazine racks, etc.) your cleaning crew has less set up time and more time to spend on your rugs. This can dramatically effect your quote. If you have been considering upholstery cleaning, now is the time. Ask for a price while the crew is already at your house cleaning rugs. You should get a better price for saving them a second trip. Here at Parker Family Carpet Cleaning we are already scheduling routes for Spring carpet cleaning in Arvada, Golden, Lakewood,. Let us know if we can help. Text/call  303-909-7988  today!

Happy New Year! Lets make it a good one!  The start of the year is a great time to do three often overlooked chores that can make a huge difference in the air  quality inside your home here in Arvada, Golden, Lakewood.. Begin by setting up your shop vac. It will be helpful with all three of these projects. If your home doesn’t have one, we highly recommend the investment. They are great for many everyday jobs, as well as for water emergencies. First, grab the step ladder and clean all the blades on your ceiling fans. Begin by shop vacuuming the large dirt and dust, then finish by wiping with a damp rag. Second, while you have the step ladder out, change the heat/ac filters. When you remove the old filter, use the shop vac to clean around the vent, as well as the vent cover. Third, pull the lower plate off your vacuum cleaner. Change the belt after giving the chamber a good shop vacuuming. Remove the bag and vacuum this area as well. Either empty or change out the bag. These simple steps will have your family starting 2023 in a healthier environment.

Happy Labor Day to everyone in Arvada, Golden, Lakewood
from Parker Family Carpet Cleaning!

Think ahead to schedule savings into your Back-to-School carpet cleaning in Arvada, Golden, Lakewood. Here at Parker Family Carpet Cleaning we are already scheduling routes for Back-to-School carpet cleaning in Arvada, Golden, Lakewood, Applewood.  We are observing all the necessary precautions for the Covid 19/Corona/Wuhan virus.  We have reduced our crews from 3 men to 2 men.   All crew members are taking temps to begin each shift and wearing masks.   We are sanitizing when arriving/leaving each job.  Everyone had lots of extra at-home time this Spring and Summer.  That can really take its toll on your carpets/area rugs/upholstery.  Let us know if we can help. Everyone is focused on Coronavirus/Covid-19/Wuhan virus, but hot August weather is here! Don't forget it's warmer for the pets as well. Here at Parker Family  Carpet Cleaning we are having a high number of emergency calls for pet accidents. Pets get dehydrated just as we do. Double check your pet's water dish in hot weather. Likewise make sure pets are not getting overheated. Take your walk early to beat the heat. Avoid unnecessary health problems for your pets and unnecessary charges from your carpet cleaners. Enjoy the last month of Summer!

We recently got  a taste of Golden history cleaning at the Rock Rest.  Everybody seems to have a story about this place.  Have you been lately?  They took advantage of the Corona slow down to freshen up the inside.  Stop in and remember all the fun!

Everyone is focused on Coronavirus/Covid-19/Wuhan virus, but hot weather is here! As summer heats up for all of us, don't forget it's warmer for the pets as well. When humans get dehydrated, they can get diarrhea. Distance runners speak of getting "runner's trots". We've been experiencing our first few weeks of summer heat and humidity. Have a great summer!

We are still seeing sidewalk rocks everywhere with hopeful messages. Brad's sidewalk rock has been a hit with the neighborhood traffic. Rick from next door accessorized it with a little sign.

Happy Memorial Day to everyone from Parker Family Carpet Cleaning! One of our favorite photos of Ava and Miles from Memorial Day past. We all miss you Miles!

Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms from Parker Family Carpet Cleaning! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Looks like great weather today in Arvada, Golden, Lakewood. Get Mom out on the patio/in the backyard for a picnic/cookout. Lots of space, sunshine. Great day to minimize Corona virus/Wuhan Virus/Covid 19 risk and celebrate Mom!

We are going old school again at Parker Family Carpet Cleaners in Golden, Arvada, Lakewood! Last month we started showing up on the job with bandanas. A month into the Covid 19/Coronavirus/Wuhan Virus crisis, we are all starting to look pretty bushy. Still no barbers/beauty salons, so Brad broke out the clippers. Everybody lined up for crewcuts, just like when we were kids.
We are working a modified schedule, with heightened safety precautions and the same attention to cleanliness on each job as we have always had. Our trucks/solutions have had an anti-viral for over 20 years. We are not concerned about suppliers being out of stock on anti-virals. Our shelves are full! Please note we are contacting all customers before arriving to check for any coughs, fevers. We are all taking our temperatures to start each shift. Let us know if we can help in these difficult times.

Anybody remember Mayday?
Mayday is the perfect holiday for the COVID19/Coronavirus/Wuhan virus event here in Golden, Arvada, Lakewood! Who remembers making mini-May baskets with Dixie cups and pipe cleaners? On May 1st kids put them on their friends' porch, ring the bell, and run off. No contact, no risk. This is a nice little pick-me-up surprise for everyone who gets one. You oldsters get busy and show the youngsters how much fun this used to be!

Medical masks are one size fits all!  Get 'em on, and be safe.  Keep others safe.

President Trump has unveiled Guidelines for Opening Up America Again, a three-phased approach based on the advice of public health experts. These steps will help state and local officials when reopening their economies, getting people back to work, and continuing to protect American lives.  Together we can get Covid-19/Coronavirus/Wuhan virus behind us.  Initial steps to reopen the economy include wearing masks, staying 6 feet away from people who are not in your party, and limiting gatherings to five people or fewer.  We are ready to get back to work here in Golden, Arvada, Lakewood!

These are crazy times, with everyone concerned about COVID-19/Corona virus/Wuhan virus. We realize you still have kids and pets, so you still have kids/pets accidents! Parker Family Carpet Cleaning is working a modified schedule, with heightened safety precautions and the same attention to cleanliness on each job as we have always had. Our trucks/solutions have had an anti-viral for over 20 years. We are not concerned about suppliers being out of stock on virucidals. Our shelves are full! Start 2020 with cleaner air for your family _________________________________________ The start of the year is a great time to do three often overlooked chores that can make a huge difference in the air inside your home. Begin by setting up your shop vac. It will be helpful with all three of these projects. If your home doesn't have one, we highly recommend the investment. They are great for many everyday jobs, as well as for water emergencies. http://www.shopvac.com/ First, grab the step ladder and clean all the blades on your ceiling fans. Begin by shop vaccing the large dirt and dust, then finish by wiping with a damp rag. Second, while you have the step ladder out, change the heat/ac filters. When you remove the old filter, use the shop vac to clean around the vent, as well as the vent cover. Third, pull the lower plate off your vacuum cleaner. Change the belt after giving the chamber a good shop vaccing. Remove the bag and vac this area as well. Either empty or change out the bag. These simple steps will have your family starting 2020 in a healthier environment. BEST OF THE WEST PARADE Saturday, July 28, 2018 This year's Parade theme is "100 Years in Golden" and will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at 10:00am. One of the best Golden Colorado Events, our parade boasts over 70 head of horses, collectible cars, creative floats, fire and emergency vehicles, and several local performing and charitable groups. It usually takes about an hour for the approximately 70 different entries to pass by. We hope you will join us for the Buffalo Bill Days Parade! Please arrive early for the best viewing. Keep in mind that parking will be challenging and Washington Ave. will be closed for the parade. The parade route will be the same this year as it has been in years past. We will have two parade announcers stationed on Washington at 10th Street and 13th Street to add to your viewing experience. Golden Community Pride Days are a great opportunity to do a little spring cleaning and get rid of some of the bigger items that normally require a disposal fee. There are a few changes to the City of Golden’s Community Pride Days this year that are worth noting. First, it is a few weeks later than it has been in the past. That means you have more time to collect the unwanted junk from your house and bring it in for disposal. When: Saturday, May 19 & Sunday, May 20 – 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Where: 1300 Catamount Drive The other change is that you MUST have a current driver’s license with your address in order to participate. The address needs to be within the City limits of Golden. To find out if your address qualifies, use the Jefferson County Address Wizard. For common household waste, please use your regular trash services.

This is the week to let Mom know how much you appreciate her! Surprise Mom with clean carpets for Mothers Day.

Get that vacuum out of the closet for help with allergies! It is that time of year. Many allergy sufferers are going crazy from pollen and other allergens. Common allergens from plants, dust, and animal dander accumulate in your carpet. Simply walking across your carpet can release these allergens into the air. Frequent vacuuming can make a huge difference. Dust mites can build up over time and be resistant to vacuuming. Time to call Parker Family Carpet Cleaning!

Here in America, April 12 is an odd national holiday, but one we can all appreciate: National Grilled Cheese Day. It's time to track down some buttery bread filled with cheesy goodness in the Arvada, Golden, Lakewood area.

Clean Rugs Start in the Garage!

When people ask us for tips on keeping their rugs clean, we tell them to start in the garage. Your carpets can take an unecessary beating from what may be tracked in from your garage floor. Parker Family Carpet Cleaning recommends the following: Empty your garage. Sweep and thoroughly spray it clean with the garden hose. Seal or paint the floor with a product from your hardware store made specifically for this purpose. It will make it much easier to sweep and maintain the garage floor. Likewise it will cut down on the concrete dust coming up from the floor. You will immediately notice a difference in how much is tracked into your home. We have had great response from families that have tried this in Golden, Arvada, Lakewood, and other cities in our area.

"Knowing what to do when a disaster strikes could be the difference between life and death."
While firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics and other emergency responders do an incredible job keeping us safe, they aren't always nearby, and they can't do it alone. Comprehensive preparedness, as pointed out in FEMA's preparedness training, requires the whole community to be prepared.

Arvada Celebrates its 10th Anniversary Milestone

It’s hard to believe the Arvada Library is celebrating the 10th anniversary in its new building in Olde Town. It’s true; the doors opened officially on September 16, 2006 moving from about a half mile away. The old location, which had housed the library since the mid-1960s, was the smallest in the county (only 700 square feet!) and was totally underutilized.

It took about a decade of planning, but the new, modern, two-story building has become the center of Arvada’s Olde Town revitalization—a great go-to place to connect, discover and create.

PRESIDENTS’ DAY: THE UNIFORM MONDAY HOLIDAY ACT

The shift from Washington’s Birthday to Presidents’ Day began in the late 1960s when Congress proposed a measure known as the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Championed by Senator Robert McClory of Illinois, this law sought to shift the celebration of several federal holidays from specific dates to a series of predetermined Mondays. The proposed change was seen by many as a novel way to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers, and it was believed that ensuring holidays always fell on the same weekday would reduce employee absenteeism. While some argued that shifting holidays from their original dates would cheapen their meaning, the bill also had widespread support from both the private sector and labor unions and was seen as a surefire way to bolster retail sales.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act also included a provision to combine the celebration of Washington’s Birthday with Abraham Lincoln’s, which fell on the proximate date of February 12. Lincoln’s Birthday had long been a state holiday in places like Illinois, and many supported joining the two days as a way of giving equal recognition to two of America’s most famous statesmen.

Congratulations to the world champion Denver Broncos!

The Parker Family had to try this coffee on the rug route Saturday.  Not too bad.

START 2016 WITH BETTER AIR QUALITY FOR YOUR FAMILY IN GOLDEN, ARVADA, LAKEWOOD
The start of the year is a great time to do three often overlooked chores that can make a huge difference in the air inside your home. These simple steps will have your family starting 2016 in a healthier environment.

Dear Ringling Bros. fans,

In March 2015, Feld Entertainment and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® announced that the Asian elephants currently touring with the shows would move by 2018 to theRingling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation® in Florida (more here). Today, we begin the next phase of this transition.

The Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation is already home to the largest herd of Asian elephants and the most successful breeding program for this endangered species in the Western Hemisphere. We want you to be among the first to know that these majestic animals will move from the touring shows to their permanent home in May 2016. Thanks to the diligent work of the entire staff, we have made the necessary plans and preparations to move the elephants sooner than anticipated. The circus will continue to feature other extraordinary animal performers, including tigers, lions, horses, dogs and camels.

The elephants' move to Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation will allow the company to focus on its Asian elephant conservation program and thepediatric cancer research partnershipwith Dr. Joshua Schiffman of Primary Children's Hospital and The Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah, all while continuing to provide a unique family experience at the circus with the next edition of The Greatest Show On Earth®.

Christmas tree recycling is provided by the City of Golden Forestry Division. Program details are distributed every December in the Golden informer. Dates and locations published every December in the “Golden Informer.” Contact the City Forrester at (303) 384-8141 with additional questions.

Where & When Can I Recycle My Christmas Tree in Arvada?

  • The City Parks Maintenance Shop at 7800 W. 62nd Avenue is accepting trees 7 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, from December 28, 2015 thru January 22, 2016.
  • Lake Arbor Lake Park at 6400 Pomona Drive is accepting trees 24/7 beginning Monday, December 28, 2015 through Monday, January 25, 2016.
  • Lutz Sports Complex at West 58th Avenue and Miller Street is accepting trees 24/7 beginning Monday, December 28, 2015 through Monday, January 25, 2016.

Tucker Lake, located just north and east of the Arvada Reservoir, will be completely drained over the next few months in order to repair a seepage issue as well as bring the irrigation outlet up to State Dam safety standards.

Tucker Lake is an approximately 150-year-old reservoir; its water source is Ralston Reservoir.  When West Woods was developed, Tucker Lake became the irrigation source for the golf course.  As more development has occurred in the area, a trail was constructed around the Lake.

Since early 2014, utilities staff have been monitoring a seepage area high on the south side of the Lake.  In June of 2015, staff noticed that the seepage area had expanded and the slope potentially becoming unstable; therefore, in July, Tucker Lake was lowered from approximately 15 feet to 12 feet to bring the water level below the area of concern.

In addition to the seepage issue, the pipe outlet used to irrigate West Woods Golf Club needs to be relined in order to meet State engineering standards, requiring the Lake to be completely drained.  This will occur during the fall and work will commence on the pipe outlet once the ground is frozen.  Repairs should be completed by March of 2016, at which time the Lake will be refilled.

Help Share the History of Heritage Square

Heritage Square located southwest of Golden, originally built as Magic Mountain theme park, will be undergoing redevelopment next year. The owner is planning a new use for the area, but has agreed to allow the removal and relocation of the storefronts. This is dependent upon finding someone to finance the move of the storefronts–a cost estimated at $50,000 per building. Interested parties need to be aware that this estimate is only for removal and does not include applicable permits and inspections, transportation, re-erection or any necessary equipment costs associated with this relocation –nor does it include finding a suitable new location. Commitments and agreements need to be in place by end of January 2016 with removal completed by February 29, 2016. Redevelopment is planned for early 2016.

Additional interest in the Victorian Events Center has also been expressed. The same criteria would apply to this structure — commitments and agreements need to be in place by the end of January 2016 with removal completed by February 29, 2016. Prospects need to be made aware of the multiple structures within this building.

Any interested parties should email manager@heritagesquare.info.

It's Time: Change Clocks, Batteries, and Sprinkler System

  Published: 26 October 2015

Fall is in the air. It is the time of year when the weather changes, the seasons change, and outdoor irrigation schedules should also change to reflect the prevailing cool, damp climate.

When Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, November 1st at 2:00 AM, many of us will be preoccupied with changing clocks, watches, and batteries in smoke detectors. However, there is one clock that can be easy to forget, and it is the timer on your irrigation controller.

Simple Safety Tips for Pumpkin Carving

The combination of slippery pumpkins and sharp knives can be dangerous. Follow these tips to help keep everyone safe when carving your Halloween pumpkin this year.

Set an Age Limit

Consumer Reports recommends that children younger than 14 years old should not do the actual pumpkin carving. But younger kids can still get in on the fun:

  • Have them draw the patterns for their pumpkins.
  • Allow them to decorate their pumpkins with markers, paint or non-carving decoration kits.
  • Let them clean out the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkins.

If you decide to let your teens carve pumpkins, closely supervise in case anything goes wrong.

Use the Right Tools

Big kitchen knives aren't the best fit for this job. According to Consumer Reports, a pumpkin carving kit is a safer option. The tools in these kits are:

  • Designed to easily pierce pumpkins
  • Not as sharp as average kitchen knives
  • Smaller and easier to control

Follow Proper Technique

Avoid finger and hand injuries:

  • Work slowly and steadily — don't rush the project.
  • Cut away from your body with the carving tool.
  • Use small, controlled motions when carving.
  • Keep your free hand out of the way to avoid mishaps.

Set Up for Safety

Before you start carving, prepare your pumpkin carving area and tools:

  • Make sure the carving area is dry, well lit and on a stable surface.
  • Wash and dry all of your tools before carving.
  • Keep your hands clean and dry to avoid slipping.

  • Ballots, Beer, and Bagpipes

You have two chances to watch Iron Jawed Angels at the library today–once at 11:15 and once at 2:30PM.   The Golden Votes party starts at 1, in the parking lot west of the library, and the parade over to the ballot box at City Hall starts at 2.  This is your chance to vote for City Council, the Library’s request for funding, and the school board recall.

    Don’t complain about government–VOTE!

ChiliFest at Golden City Brewery and PangeaAfter you’ve voted go enjoy a well-deserved pint (or two!) at Golden City Brewery.  They’re hosting a Chilifest, with proceeds going to benefit Annual fundraiser for the food bank at theGolden Christian Action Guild.

Pangea Coffee Roasters will be joining them in this event, the chilis will be split between the two locations (which are right across the street from each other). Pangea will be accepting $10 donations for a printed coffee mug, with a coffee beverage, and the Brewery will be doing their usual printed pint glass with beer for $10 donation to the Christian Action Guild.

They are committed to raising enough money for the CAG to purchase a double wide reach in fridge so they can store cold items, like milk.  The Chilifest starts at noon.  Be aware that they often sell out of glasses.  This is a perfect opportunity to drink in the middle of the day and feel righteous about it!

piperIf you like bagpipes, plan to spend the evening at the Jefferson Unitarian Church, where they’re hosting a Fall Ceilidh.  They’ll have music, dance, Boulder Beer, food from Pasty Republic, and lots of kilts and bagpipes!  The Colorado Youth Pipe Band and Highland Dancers will be there, as well as the Queen City Pipe Band, Centennial Pipe Band, and lots of other Celtic Performers.  A portion of the proceeds goes to support the Colorado Youth Pipe Band.  The party runs from 6-10.  Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children 5-12, and free for kids under 5. Buy tickets online or at the door.

Kallie Kessler of Denver Natural Areas talks with kids from the Ricks Center at DU on Earth Day.

In the 40 years since Earth Day — the high holiday of the environmental movement — was scheduled for every April 22, the world has changed.

Smog levels nationwide have dropped by about a quarter, lead in the air is down more than 90 percent, and polluted lakes and rivers are now clean enough to swim in.

Organizers say the problems people need to worry about now are less visible than they used to be, but millions still commemorate the holiday with outward displays of devotion to the cause.

  •  The city of Denver will host an Earth Day Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Civic Center. The event will include activities and displays intended to inform and inspire participants to honor Earth and work toward more conservation and preservation.

  •  Discovery Canyon Campus High School, 1810 N. Gate Blvd., Colorado Springs, is having an Earth Day presentation from 10 to 11 a.m. The presentation includes a recycled fashion show, games and prizes for the participants and more.

  •  A volunteer park clean-up event will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Belmar Park, 801 S. Wadsworth Blvd. Info: lakewood.org/green.

  •  US Geological Survey Geologist Pete Modreski is leading an Earth Day geology/nature hike at 4 p.m. to the top of South Table Mountain. Meet at the trailhead near the intersection of 19th and Belvedere Streets in Golden. The hike follows a good but steep trail to the top. Contact Pete Modreski, pmodreski@usgs.gov, 303-202-4766 or 720-205-2553 with questions or in case of inclement weather.

Trees must be stripped of all ornaments, hardware, strings of lights and tinsel. The trees will be turned into mulch, which will eventually be available for free at the public pickup site on 11th Street, just west of the Clear Creek History Park.

For further details, contact the City of Golden Forestry office at 303-384-8141.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos, with a Hall of Fame quarterback calling the shots as the team's top football executive and a future Hall of Famer behind center in Peyton Manning, are the new America's Team.

[+] EnlargePeyton Manning
Dustin Bradford/Getty ImagesPeyton Manning and the Denver Broncos are No. 1, at least according to a Harris Poll survey.

That's according to The Harris Poll, which surveyed 2,543 adults (1,275 of whom said they followed professional football). The nationwide poll was taken from Sept. 10-17.

The Broncos replaced the Dallas Cowboys, who had finished in The Harris Poll's top spot for each of the previous six years as the "favorite team" of adults who follow professional football. The New York Giants finished as the No. 2 team with the Green Bay Packers at No. 3, the Cowboys at No. 4 and Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 5.

The Seattle Seahawks, who routed the Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII this past February, came in at No. 6. The San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints rounded out the top 10.

Earlier this season, Broncos coach John Fox said, "I think when you coach here or play here, you kind of realize the reach of the team. You always knew this was a tough place to play if you've ever had to compete here in a game, but the reach is something you see when you're around it every day."

The Broncos are currently 4-1, with Manning poised to break Brett Favre's NFL mark for career touchdown passes (508). Manning has thrown 506 touchdown passes in his career.

The Broncos have the NFL's second-longest home sellout streak -- trailing only the Washington Redskins. The Broncos have sold out every home game since the start of the 1970 season.

Buckets Of Awareness: Understanding The Social Media Phenomenon

Many comedians, musicians and politicians, across the United States share two things in common: the suffix –ians, and the fact that they are participating in an event that struck nation full throttle, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Of course, these men and women are not the only ones taking part in the event, as people’s social media webpages are simply full of their friends pouring ice on their heads.

What is ALS?
Before covering the basics of the challenge, it is imperative to first discuss what exactly Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is. According to the ALS Association, it is a “progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.” As the nerve cells, or neurons, die, the brain loses its ability to initiate and control the body’s muscles. Over time, many patients with ALS become paralyzed.

The disease is commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Gehrig was an early 1900s New York Yankees first baseman. He was a notable ballplayer and was later referred to as "The Iron Horse" due to this persistence in playing 2,130 consecutive games. At the height of the 1938 season, Gehrig began reporting physical limitations such as movement deterioration. In June 1939, Gehrig was diagnosed with ALS, where he was given only a few years left to live, and later died in 1941. However, his essence lives on to this day in his durability to fight onwards.

Cool and Inspring
The origin of dumping ice on one’s head to raise awareness for ALS is unclear but is attributed to many people. Many attribute it to 2007 Boston College graduate Peter Frates. He is a former Division 1 athlete who was the captain of the BC baseball team his senior year. In March of 2012, Frates was diagnosed with ALS after some motor difficulty. Today, he can neither walk nor talk.

In late July, Frates learned of the challenge from friend Pat Quinn who is also battling ALS. In essence, Quinn nominated Frates to take the challenge. However, due to his lack of mobility, and his statement that “ice water and ALS are a bad mix,” he instead moved his head to the rhythm of Vanilla Ice’s hit song, "Ice Ice Baby." On August 14 however, Frates joined Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, third baseman Will Middlebrooks and members of the Frates family went to Fenway Park, and filmed themselves pouring ice on one another’s heads.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is quite simple, despite the narrow time window in which to do it. In the video, one must first and foremost thank the person who nominated them. The polite statement at the start of the video indicates gratitude for being able to take part in the experience and spreading the news to another circle of friends. The nominee then declares three (or more) people who they think should partake in the challenge giving themselves 24 hours to either donate or douse themselves with bone-chilling water. Lastly, the nominee themself or a cohort pours the bucket of ice on the nominee’s head. If the video is not posted, one must donate $100 to the ALS Association.

There are many variations of the challenge. The method detailed above either raises awareness by dumping ice on one’s head, or raises awareness and donates money. Other methods detail that the nominees donate either way, but a lesser amount when they actually do the challenge, and the full $100 when they don’t do the challenge.

Today, there are over 30,000 Americans that have been diagnosed with ALS. Over these past three weeks that the Ice Bucket Challenge has been in circulation, the ALS Association has raised over $15 million. That is 15 million dollars in 20 days. On average, each day averages $750,000. That’s a lot of money, and it is all going to use in helping researchers and scientists find a cure.

More and more people are participating in the challenge and donating money. In due time, we will see just how big of an impact pouring ice on one’s head has made and how much money was raised.

A Personal Touch
At first glance, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is analogous to those chain emails from years ago that promised you bad luck if you didn’t forward the message. Although it might seem fun to pour ice on yourself or another person, the challenge also emanates seriousness.

For me, doing the challenge was personal. On December 24, 2003, my grandfather on my father’s side passed away from ALS. Over the past 11 years, my family has donated money to the ALS foundation. So, I took this opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and donate money in memory of my grandfather.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is only one of many ways in which you can donate. On November 8, the city of Addison will host a few-mile trek called the Walk to Defeat ALS. Much further away, hundreds of people bike from Newton, Mass. to Greenwich, Conn., in the ALS Tri-State Trek, a journey that my uncle takes part in on a yearly basis. This past year, he and his team raised over $35,000. All the teams combined raised over $718,000 for the ALS Therapy Development Institute, one of many research companies helping to find a cure.

Rockies' Culberson hits walk-off; Arenado streak at 23

DENVER -- Pinch-hitter Charlie Culberson felt good about his swing and then felt even better an instant later when he saw the ball he hit sail over the center field fence.

Culberson hit a game-winning two-run homer in the ninth inning off Kyle Farnsworth, and the Colorado Rockies, down by six runs early, rallied again to beat the New York Mets 11-10 in a wild affair on Saturday night.

It was his first homer of the season.

''I don't hit many home runs, but for some reason right there, I hit it and I just knew it had to go out,'' Culberson said. ''More to the point, like it had better go out.

''Hitting a walkoff, I really can't describe it. That's definitely the best feeling I've ever had in baseball, so far.''

The Mets overcame Colorado's eight-run fifth inning, that included Nolan Arenado's grand slam, and took a 10-9 lead on Juan Lagares' RBI single in the ninth off LaTroy Hawkins (1-0).

But Troy Tulowitzki, who recorded his 1,000th career hit earlier, singled off Farnsworth (0-2) to start the bottom of the ninth. He advanced to second on a deep flyout by Arenado, and Culberson followed with the winning drive off a 1-2 pitch from Farnsworth.

The crowd erupted as he rounded the bases. As he neared the plate, he tossed his helmet and jumped onto home plate as he was mobbed by his teammates.

''He threw a first-pitch fastball about 95 mph, but I saw it pretty good and I knew he was going to go after me and try to get me out,'' Culberson said. ''He just gave me a good pitch to hit and I barreled it up.''

Farnsworth said he didn't quite get the location he wanted.

''Fastball away. It hit the middle, I guess,'' Farnsworth said. ''He got a good swing on it. It's always difficult. We just have to keep on battling. Guys played well, and we came out on the wrong end of it.''

It was a sudden finish to a game in which the teams combined for 30 hits, including Arenado's slam that extended his major league-best hitting streak to 23 games.

Tulowitzki notched his 1,000th hit in the seventh when he singled up the middle off reliever Daisuke Matsuzaka.

''I think the No. 1 thing on my 1,000th hit is I'll remember this game and how we won it,'' Tulowitzki said. ''That makes it that much more special.''

The ninth-year pro became the fifth Rockies player with 1,000 hits and the 78th active player to reach the milestone. He scored from third on Jordan Pacheco's sacrifice fly to give Colorado a 9-8 lead, but the Mets tied it again in the eighth on Chris Young's RBI single.

Staked to an early 6-0 lead, Mets starter Jenrry Mejia had blanked the Rockies through the first four innings and seemed headed toward the solid pitching outing New York needed. Instead, he became the third straight Mets starter to fail to get out of the fifth after the rotation began the season with 26 straight starts of at least five innings.

The turnaround was triggered by Ryan Wheeler's first home run of the season leading off the fifth. The Rockies sent 11 men to the plate in the inning.

In one stunning five-pitch stretch, Mejia gave up RBI singles to Charlie Blackmon, Drew Stubbs and Carlos Gonzalez as the Rockies tied it 4-4.

Mejia then hit Tulowitzki in his upper left arm with a pitch to load the bases, and Arenado drove the next pitch into the left field bleachers for his second career slam and the first by a Rockies player this season. Arenado also tied Dante Bichette for the second longest hitting streak in Rockies history.

Matsuzaka then relieved Mejia, who gave up eight runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The Mets, who built a 6-0 lead off Rockies starter Franklin Morales, fought back in the sixth to tie it at 8, getting a run-scoring double from Young and an RBI single from Curtis Granderson.

Daniel Murphy got the Mets going with a one-out triple in the first and scored when David Wright followed with a double. Anthony Recker and Lucas Duda added RBI singles.

New York added to its lead when Wright singled to start the third, stole second and took third on a groundout. He scored on Granderson's single, and Granderson came in on a double by Anthony Recker, who scored on third baseman Arenado's throwing error.

Broncos Fired Up for Sunday

Posted Jan 17, 2014

By Mike Morris

Broncos players couldn't contain their excitement with Sunday's AFC Championship Game on the horizon.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- David Brutondidn’t hesitate for a moment in his response.  Instead, the Broncos safety and special teams captain clearly pronounced what has become growingly apparent throughout the course of the week: Sunday’s showdown with the Patriots will be played on no ordinary stage.

“It’s not another home game. That’s what it comes down to,” Bruton said. “It’s the AFC Championship Game. It’s the last game before to you go to that 'ship. It’s a dream game in two weeks. There is added pressure to this game. Everyone wants to go out and perform well, perform to the best of their abilities.”

Coupled with the stakes that have been raised to Rocky Mountain heights, however, is the undeniable excitement about playing for a berth in the Super Bowl – the sport’s grandest stage and a place where the Broncos haven’t been since Jan. 31, 1999.

“I’m ecstatic. It’s a one-in-a-lifetime deal,” Bruton said. “Some guys get a chance to actually get to this game. We’ve been to the playoffs the past three years and I’ve never gotten to this game. So I’m extremely excited, happy and blessed for this opportunity.”

He’s certainly not the only one.

“I’m really excited, it’s an opportunity for us to go out there and get one game closer to the Super Bowl,” linebacker Danny Trevathan said. “We have this game in front of us. We aren’t going to do anything different. We’re just preparing and staying within our realm. Just getting excited and getting motivated to go out here and try to put together a good 60 minutes.”

Of course, the players aren’t the only ones amped for the game. Broncomania has swept over fans in Denver and all over the country – creating a deafening atmosphere at Sports Authority Field at Mile High that left defensive tackle Terrance Knighton impressed after the Broncos’ 24-17 win over the Chargers in the Divisional Round.

Impressed, but prepared to be even more charged on Sunday.

“It was crazy last week, more than I expected,” Knighton said. “And this week, it will probably be even louder. That only gets us going, so we definitely need that.”

“It’s great, all the fans are behind you,” defensive tackle Sylvester Williams said. “That’s a part of this game, when you the fans are behind you.”

“It’s a blessing,” he added.

Bruton was just as quick to send a message to Broncos fans as he was to pronounce his own enthusiasm for Sunday’s game.

“Let’s get loud,” safety David Bruton said. “Let’s make it uncomfortable for (Patriots quarterback) Tom (Brady) back there. Let’s get it rocking because it was rocking last week and I expect it to be decibels higher this week since we’re a lot closer. Our fans have been great so let’s just keep that riding.”

After a week of preparation and anticipation, the weekend has finally arrived in Denver – with the franchise’s biggest game since January 2006 trailing closely behind.

Game on.

“We know that it’s going to be a tough game,” Bruton said. “It’s a very high-caliber opponent with multiple weapons offensively, defensively and special teams. It’s just going to be our best versus their best and see whose best comes out on top.”

The Colorado Cowboy Gathering celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2014 and with it carries on 25 years of cowboy heritage, traditions and entertainment. Cowboy poetry is a form of poetry which grew out of the traditions of workers on cattle drives and ranches. After a long day in the saddle, cowboys would gather around a campfire and entertain one another with tall tales and folk songs¦ and so goes the story called Cowboy Poetry.

During the Colorado Cowboy Gathering, cowboy poets, western singers and old fashioned yodelers bring to life the joys and hardships of the old west. Audiences can take a break from the fast-paced, high-tech world and relive the life of the true cowboy. First timers and old hands will be entertained and inspired by our cowboy and cowgirl poets and musicians. Their poems, songs and witticisms about how life was and still is on farms, ranches and the range, bridge the past with the present. There will be some familiar faces and some of the best poets and singers we have ever herded into one corral!

Since family life is an important part of the ranching culture, we have also added plenty of programming for families with little buckaroos. Our Themed Session Matinees are a perfect event for the entire family – hear songs and stories of ranchers, cattle drives, life in the Outback of Australia and the love of the land. Inner workings of a 100-year-old steam engine by Scott Dressel-MartinGOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 21, 2013 – Golden History Museums and a coalition of Denver-area institutions will offer free admission and special activities on one special evening called Night at the Museums on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2011.

The Golden History Center and the Astor House Museum will both be open from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Visitors to the Astor House Museum, 822 12th St., will enjoy talking with costumed guides and testing their wits on tricky Victorian parlor games.

Museum-goers at the Golden History Center, 923 10th St., will take a special hands-on tour through the Made in Golden exhibit. The brand-new display tells the story of historic innovations from Golden using such diverse examples as a needle-free injection system and a virtually indestructible dog toy.

“There are some rare and really special artifacts that we’ve pulled out for Made in Golden,” said Curator Mark Dodge. “I’m particularly excited about a real, working steam engine that was once used on the floor of the Coors Brewery. It will be one of the focal points of the exhibit that will both amaze and inform our visitors.” Live demonstrations will be at 6 and 7 p.m.

The other participating location in Golden is the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. Four Mile Historic Park, Littleton Museum, Dinosaur Ridge and many other Denver-metro locations will also offer free admission. Visit Denver.org for a full list of participants.

Columbus Day 2014

Monday, October 13, 2014 List of dates for other years

Columbus Day, which is annually on the second Monday of October, remembers Christopher Columbus' arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. This holiday is controversial because the European settlement in the Americas led to the demise of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples.

What do people do?

Officially, the people of the USA are invited to celebrate the anniversary of the discovery of their country with church services and other activities. In some towns and cities, special church services, parades and large events are held. Most celebrations are concentrated around the Italian-American community. The celebrations in New York and San Francisco are particularly noteworthy. In Hawaii Columbus Day is also known as Landing Day or Discoverer's Day.

Not all parts of the United States celebrate Columbus Day. It is not a public holiday in California, Nevada and Hawaii. Moreover, Native Americans’ Day is celebrated in South Dakota, while Indigenous People’s Day is celebrated in Berkeley, California.

Public life

Columbus day is a public holiday in many parts of the United states, but is not observed or is not a holiday in some states. Government offices and schools are generally closed, but businesses may be open. The flag of the United States is displayed on Government buildings.

Background

Christopher Columbus is often portrayed as the first European to sail to the Americas. He is sometimes portrayed as the discoverer of the New World. However, this is controversial on many counts. There is evidence that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were Viking explorers from Scandinavia. In addition, the land was already populated by indigenous peoples, who had 'discovered' the Americas thousands of years before.

Columbus Day originated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869. The first state-wide celebration was held in Colorado in 1907. In 1937, Columbus Day become a holiday across the United States. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October. The date on which Columbus arrived in the Americas is also celebrated as the Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in Latin America and some Latino communities in the USA. However, it is a controversial holiday in some countries and has been re-named in others.

Columbus Day celebrations are controversial because the settlement of Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a very large proportion of the native people. It has been argued that this was a direct result of Columbus' actions. It is clear that the arrival of the European settlers led to the demise of a large proportion of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It has also been argued that Columbus should not be honored for discovering North America, as he only went as far as some islands in the Caribbean and never got as far as mainland America.

Rockies first baseman adds to thrills with homer after pregame ceremony

9/25/13: Todd Helton catches the first pitch from his daughter Tierney, then is given a horse prior to his last home game with the Rockies

DENVER -- The Rockies commemorated Todd Helton's last game at Coors Field on Wednesday night, after 17 years in purple pinstripes, by presenting him with a horse.

But before riding off, Helton took his own trot around the bases.

In his first at-bat, with one out in the bottom of the second, Helton launched Red Sox starter Jake Peavy's cut fastball into the right-field stands. A sellout crowd of 48,755 poured its heart out during a night of ceremony that also starred his family, involved special former teammates and guests in person and via video, and actually included a gift horse. The place tripped into delirium when the ball floated over the out-of-town scoreboard and Helton floated all the way home.

Helton, 40, who announced recently that he's retiring at season's end, also drove in a run on a third-inning sacrifice fly and doubled to left for a third RBI in the fifth inning of a 15-5 loss to the Red Sox.

The scene played out on a field spangled in Helton's No. 17 -- in purple and white beside the first- and third-base lines and etched into the center-field grass. The chances of that number being worn by a Colorado player again are probably zero.

"You can dream about it, and obviously, I hoped I would go out and play well today," Helton said. "There was so much going on before the game, my expectations really weren't that high. So to go out and to hit a home run ... I'm very proud of that double the other way.

"To have my last game here, to be able to go out and play and be productive, it means a lot to me."

It's the definition of a beautiful sunset.

The homer was Helton's 369th, which tied him with Ralph Kiner for 74th all time. He also lifted his extra-base hit total to 998, which means Helton has a chance in three season-ending games at Dodger Stadium to join the 1,000 club. He has 2,518 hits, which places him ahead of Hall of Famer Joe Morgan and in 94th place all time. He closed his career at Coors Field with a .345 batting average, 227 home runs, 321 doubles, 28 triples, 859 RBIs and 874 runs scored in 1,141 games.

And, don't forget, a horse, of course.

The gift to the Helton family was a majestic, three-time championship Tobiano Gelding Paint Horse, a 6-year-old named A Tru Bustamove, who is from one of the leading performance sires of the American Paint Association. According to the Rockies' press release, the horse is comfortable with anything "from world-class competition to recreational riding, ranching and roping."

The saddle was tooled in Greeley, Colo., by Mark Fellini, who engraved the saddle. In addition, Tom Palmer of Pueblo, Colo., engraved a custom silver cap with the Rockies' logo, which rests atop the saddle.

"It was a lot of fun," Helton said. "It really was, to be able to tip my cap every time I went up to the plate. To be able to have my daughters run out there and grab the base -- what a wonderful surprise that was. And I got a horse out of the deal. That's always cool.

"It was surprising, there's no doubt about it."

Still, in Helton's eyes, his family's participation stole the show.

His wife, Christy, and daughters, Tireney Faith, who turned 14 on Tuesday, and Gentry Grace, 4, were on the field with him during pregame ceremonies. So was his older brother, Rodney Helton, whom many college football fans remember as a linebacker at the University of Alabama in the ealry 1990s. Also on the field were former Rockies teammates Brad Hawpe and Aaron Cook, who were part of the Rockies' 2007 World Series participant and 2009 playoff team, and Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, a close friend who played football with Todd Helton at Tennessee.

Tierney Helton threw out the first pitch, to her father. And at the start of the ninth inning, Tierney and Gentry dashed onto the field to take away first base as a souvenir.

"To look over and see their smiles ... Seeing them come out on the field, that's definitely the highlight of the night for me," Helton said.

For a guy who has loved the grind and challenge of the game, but not always the attention about what comes with it, it all went off well.

"After all the pregame stuff, I asked him how he kept it together like he did," manager Walt Weiss said. "True to form, he said, 'I got to get ready to play a game.' So he steps up there and hits one into the seats. It would've been foolish to even think that that was going to happen tonight, and he does it in his first at-bat."

Or maybe not.

"The great ones do that, man, they really do," said Rockies veteran Michael Cuddyer, who has played the outfield primarily since joining the club in 2012, but likely will move to first full time. "They've got a way of stepping up.

"Cal Ripken [Jr.], every single time there was a big at-bat, he hit a homer -- All-Star Game, record-breaking game. Derek Jeter, 3,000th hit, homer. It's only fitting. Todd's in that company so why not? Last home game? Homer."

The game featured many moving video tributes, particularly from former teammates Jason Giambi of the Indians and Clint Barmes of the Pirates, as well as current Pirates and former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, particularly touched Helton. The Indians are fighting for a playoff berth and the Pirates have clinched a National League Wild Card spot.

"Some of the guys talking got to me a little bit -- Hurdle, 'Barmie,' 'G,' that they took the time just to sit there to talk about me when they have other things going on in their life," Helton said.

Helton also humbly thanked Peavy and the Red Sox for helping the night go smoothly.

"It was kind of surreal," Helton said. "I hit it and I'm like, that's a homer. But I really wasn't sure. I thought, 'That couldn't really happen.' I think Peavy just did me a favor. He's a good dude and he probably just helped me out right there."

Rockies hitting coach Dante Bichette said, "It's too good to be true. It's almost like they planned it. … But it's all right. It ain't that easy."

At game's end, Helton led the Rockies' traditional fan appreciation lap around the stadium, shaking hands and receiving the applause. Even the Red Sox stayed in their dugout to applaud and congratulate him. After completing the lap and hugging every teammate, coach and person associated with the Rockies at home plate, Helton did television interviews. Then, he stepped back onto the grass for one more tip of the cap.

"I just knew it was the last time," he said. "It was a special moment. They're all special. I'm going to hopefully remember all of them, remember the whole night. Everything about it was great. If we would've won, it would've been perfect. We didn't, but I hit a homer."

DENVER - Tonight will be an emotional and historic night at Coors Field as Todd Helton plays his final home game at Coors Field.

Helton is retiring.

The first baseman has spent all 17 years of his Major League career with the Rockies.

Helton ranks among the top 100 players all-time in hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs, walks, extra-base hits, total bases, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, according to MLB.com. See Helton's stats: http://ch7ne.ws/1b6TUmf

"I'll miss the anticipation of walking out of the tunnel and seeing the fans, and getting ready to play the game," said Helton. "That's going to be the toughest part to me."

"The fans of Colorado, I'd like to thank them," Helton said. "It's been an honor to be your first baseman for the last 17 years. I have grown from a man, to a husband and into a father. We have seen the good times and the bad. It's been a pleasure to share all of that with you."

In honor of Todd's final home game, the Rockies have mowed a giant "17" in center field and "17" is painted on both the first base and third base lines.

For most of Helton's career he was the Rockies representative on the national landscape. Helton was a five-time All-Star from 2000-2004, starting in three games from 2001-2003.

Helton's greatest professional moment was when he helped the Rockies get to their first World Series in 2007 against the Boston Red Sox. Boston would go on to sweep the Rockies in the Fall Classic.

Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's Day or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, "the Day of the Festival of Patrick") is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on 17 March, the anniversary of his death. It commemorates Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461), the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.[2]

It is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland),[3] the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official feast day in the early seventeenth century, and has gradually become a celebration of Irish culture in general.[4]

The day is generally characterised by the attendance of church services,[4][5] wearing of green attire,[6] public parades and processions, and the lifting of Lenten restrictions on eating, and drinking alcohol,[6][7][8] which is often proscribed during the rest of the season.[4][6][7][8]

Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland,[9] Northern Ireland,[10] Newfoundland and Labrador and Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora, especially in places such as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand

ABOUT US
Pictured are a number of Buffalo Bill Saddle Club members as they appeared in a special 1950 ceremony atop Lookout Mountain. Photo by Kathleen's of Golden
This events roots derive from the commemorative trail rides by the Buffalo Bill Saddle Club to Buffalo Bill's graveon the top of Lookout Mountain which began sometime in the 1940s. Since everything Western was so popular in the 1960s the manager of the local Chamber of Commerce felt the trail rides could be expanded upon for an activity to promote Golden. So the large contingent of riders rode up the mountain one summer day and when they rode back down, they rode through town the first Buffalo Bill Days parade. Thereafter, the Chamber of Commerce expanded on the trail ride, making it into a community-wide event. Events were added such as an arts and crafts fair, food vendors, a street dance, parade, and a golf tournament. Over the years, the local volunteer Fire Department jumped in by cooking a pancake breakfast to start the days events and various organization s hosted spaghetti dinners for the community.
In 1985, the Chamber felt they could no longer commit the resources to run the event and asked the Golden Lions Club to take it over. The Lions Club did, in fact, run the event in 1986 and 1987, having given up its own 4th of July community celebration in order to concentrate all of its efforts on Buffalo Bill Days. However in 1988, the Lions Club turned the event back over to the Chamber so they could go back and continue their 4th of July activities. After the 1988 event, the City stepped in and appointed the first all-volunteer Board of Directors whose sole function was to sustain Buffalo Bill Days as the citys sole community-wide event. To this day, it continues as an autonomous, all volunteer organization. It is these volunteers responsibility to raise the funds necessary to cover the costs of staging the event as the event is not funded by any other organization or business. Its directors function not only to coordinate running the event with other participating organizations and arranging for all the equipment, sanitation, advertising, and sponsorships, but also each director is responsible for a specific part of the event, i.e. entertainment, arts and crafts, food vendors, childrens rides and games, and the parade. Since its inception as an autonomous organization, the volunteers have been able to expand the scope of the event and have been quite successful in drawing attendees from throughout the Denver area who enjoy bringing their families to a wholesome, small-town community event.
July 25-29, 2012 will soon be upon us and, starting on Wednesday, Fossil Trace Golf Club, Parfet Park and Lions Park ballfields will be bustling with activity as volunteers prepare the parks for the staging of this year's event.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.
General John A. Logan

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

In 1915, inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields," Moina Michael replied with her own poem:

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

She then conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need. Later a Madam Guerin from France was visiting the United States and learned of this new custom started by Ms.Michael and when she returned to France, made artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widowed women. This tradition spread to other countries. In 1921, the Franco-American Children's League sold poppies nationally to benefit war orphans of France and Belgium. The League disbanded a year later and Madam Guerin approached the VFW for help. Shortly before Memorial Day in 1922 the VFW became the first veterans' organization to nationally sell poppies. Two years later their "Buddy" Poppy program was selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. In 1948 the US Post Office honored Ms Michael for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stampwith her likeness on it.

Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country.

There are a few notable exceptions. Since the late 50's on the Thursday before Memorial Day, the 1,200 soldiers of the 3d U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. They then patrol 24 hours a day during the weekend to ensure that each flag remains standing. In 1951, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of St. Louis began placing flags on the 150,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery as an annual Good Turn, a practice that continues to this day. More recently, beginning in 1998, on the Saturday before the observed day for Memorial Day, the Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts place a candle at each of approximately 15,300 grave sites of soldiers buried at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park on Marye's Heights (the Luminaria Program). And in 2004, Washington D.C. held its first Memorial Day parade in over 60 years.

To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps."

The Moment of Remembrance is a step in the right direction to returning the meaning back to the day. What is needed is a full return to the original day of observance. Set aside one day out of the year for the nation to get together to remember, reflect and honor those who have given their all in service to their country.

But what may be needed to return the solemn, and even sacred, spirit back to Memorial Day is for a return to its traditional day of observance. Many feel that when Congress made the day into a three-day weekend in with the National Holiday Act of 1971, it made it all the easier for people to be distracted from the spirit and meaning of the day. As the VFW stated in its 2002 Memorial Day address: "Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day."

On January 19, 1999 Senator Inouye introduced bill S 189 to the Senate which proposes to restore the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day back to May 30th instead of "the last Monday in May". On April 19, 1999 Representative Gibbons introduced the bill to the House (H.R. 1474). The bills were referred the Committee on the Judiciary and the Committee on Government Reform.

To date, there has been no further developments on the bill. Please write your Representative and your Senators, urging them to support these bills. You can also contact Mr. Inouye to let him know of your support.

HOUSTON -- It doesn't feel like it to Todd Helton, but Friday night will be his 15th straight Opening Day start at first base.

That's a longer streak than Lou Gehrig (1926-39). It's also one behind former Astros great Jeff Bagwell (1991-2006).

Helton's is the longest active Opening Day streak among Major League players. Chipper Jones had started in 16 straight openers for the Braves, but that run ended Thursday.

"Fifteen years is a long time," Helton said Thursday before working out with his club at Minute Maid Park. "I never thought I'd play that long. Going through it, being in the moment, you don't really think about it that much. It seems like it's where you're supposed to be and what you're supposed to be doing."

Helton, who hit .302 in 124 games and demonstrated he has production in his bat as long as his back is healthy, has experienced some high Opening Day moments, but he had an easy time coming up with his favorite.

"It was my first one, in Arizona, opening up that ballpark," Helton said. "That's kind of hard to beat -- the first game in a ballpark and your first Opening Day."

February will be here soon.  That means it's time for the 2011 Denver Heart ball.  This year it will be held on February 26th, at the Hyatt Regency.       http://techcenter.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp   The Denver Heart Ball raises funds to support the mission of the Heart Association http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3051908 and makes a special appeal to programs that benefit childen's health.

Start the New year with better air quality for your family.  January is a great time to do three often overlooked chores that can make a huge difference in the air inside your home.  Begin by setting up your shop vac.  It will be helpful with all three of these projects.  If your home doesn't have one, we highly recommend the investment.  They are great for many everday jobs, as well as for water emergencies.  http://www.shopvac.com/    First, grab the step ladder and clean all the blades on your ceiling fans.  Begin by shop vaccing the large dirt and dust, then finish by wiping with a damp rag.  Second, while you have the step ladder out, change the heat/ac filters.  When you remove the old filters, use the shop vac to clean around the vents, as well as the vent covers.  Third, pull the lower plate off your vacuum cleaner.  Change the belt after giving the chamber a good shop vaccing.  Remove the bag and vac this area as well.  Either empty or change out the bag.  These simple steps will have your family starting 2009 in a healthier environment.
